Honesty, Honor and Integrity

Truth is the basic foundation upon which all self-improvement is based. The bottom line is found in the quote, "The truth shall set you free."

Until we can face things as they aren't, we can't hope to improve them. In fact, looking at things as they are, without changing them is a practice that in itself is nearly miraculous. However, mostly we don't do that. Mostly we look at things through our stories, excuses, fears, and agendas.

For many there is a temptation to exaggerate, to say things to gain approval, success, or avoid negative consequences. While it is true that speaking the truth needs to be balanced with love and compassion, it's an entirely different thing to be able to recognize, and accept unbiased truth.

Common coping mechanisms include justification, blaming, hiding, denial, and complete fabrication. All of these take a heavy toll. So much easier to face things exactly as they are.

The other side of honesty is Integrity, or honoring your word.
