Addictions and Congruence

Did you realize that a HUGE percentage of the population is
addicted to something?

20.8% of Americans are addicted to cigarretes, and that becomes
29.2% when you include all forms of tobacco and nicotine.

22.9% of Americans report engaging in binge drinking once
per month or more.

8.3% of the population is addicted to illegal drugs according to
the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. That doesn't count
"recreational" users.

10% are addicted to sex.

5.7% are addicted to gambling.

Let alone food, coffee, tv, computer and video games, etc.

This all translates into millions, and millions, and millions of
people that are suffering from addictions.

Now one factor that complicates this is the issue of quitting. In
other words when someone decides they are going to handle their
addiction - they often phrase it as quitting or stopping the
behavior.

We've all heard it or done it.

"I'm going to stop drinking!"

"I'm going to quit smoking."

There are two problems with this phraseology. First, the phrase
tags back to the problem. Thus covertly reinforcing the problem, and
making it more difficult to actually quit or stop.

Much better to phrase it in the positive.

"I'm going to get healthy."

"I'm going to honor myself."

Even more subtle is the incongruence or dissociation that is
implied.

One half of a person is invested into the behavior that is a
problem.
While, the other half of a person wants to change, or stop, or quit
it.

Neither half is whole.

Thus, I say make the goal congruence.

"I am going to be congruent about my behaviors."

"I honor all parts of myself when I make decisions."

"I will do things I only feel good about."

The point it to state the goal in a way that is toward
what you do want (rather than quiting or stopping)
and to include in the goal statement something about
being congruent.

Congruence the way I am speaking about it refers to honoring all
aspects of oneself.

You can use this to support your friends, clients, or yourself.

I honor you at the deepest level.
